It has a variety of resources to include publications, social tools, mobile apps, television, and articles covering a variety of health related issues. The CDC tracks outbreaks of infectious diseases also. This information is available in English; however, it does provide downloadable material in Spanish as well. Face the Facts Face the Facts is a Project of George Washington University that provides users with critical information about issues facing American today. As a nonpartisan group, the project works to provide Americans with the facts, not opinions. Some of the critical information you can find on the site include deficits, taxes, environmental, economy, education, infrastructure, national security, healthcare, social security, and Medicare. For a nutrition educator, they provide factual information on food insecurity. FoodSafety.gov This site is your source to food safety information provided by United States government agencies. They provide relevant information from the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and states health departments. The site covers all aspects of food safety as well as provides consumers with valuable information and recalls and alerts. You can also report problems to the site and a place to ask questions and receive a response within 24 hours. Green Fact Founded in 2001, Green Facts is a nonprofit initiative to inform the public about complex scientific reports on health and the environment. The partner with the various organization on a broad range of topics to include air pollution, biodiversity, chemical substances, climate change., consumer safety, disease prevention, energy, food, phthalates, radiation, sustainable development, and risks of new technology. The site offers facts sheets, current news, and a monthly newsletter. Health.gov Health.gov is a government website sponsored by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. The site offers a dietary blog and is the home of the ODPHP’s published guides, the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, and Healthy People 2020. . The goal of the site is to provide Americans the information they need to keep the nation healthy. My Plate My Plate is an on-line nutrition tool published by the United States government to help Americans develop a nutritious eating plan by dividing what we eat into five groups—grains, vegetables, fruit, protein, and dairy. According to the National Institute of Health (n.d.), “A healthy eating plan gives your body the nutrients it needs every day while staying within your daily calorie goal for weight loss.” Nutrition.gov Nutrition.gov is a government sponsored site that provides accurate information about weight loss. The site contains information regarding food content, meal planning, dietary supplements and weight management through the various stages of life. You can also find videos covering a variety of nutrition topics. President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition website is an excellent source of information. Their mission is to “engage, educate, and empower all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and proper nutrition.” The site provides facts, research, and reports relating to health. And they offer some initiatives to include PALA+, Let’s Move and the President’s Challenge, all of which encourage people to eat right and move. This information is available in English. Sharecare Sharecare is an online resource for health and wellness information. The site has hundreds of videos addressing health topics, provides a database of specialty providers, and allows members to follow leading experts in the field of interest. The site also offers challenges, assessments, quizzes, doctor visit guides, and health guides. One of its best features is The Real Age Test, which allows one to complete a test and obtained personalized recommendations for healthier living. Statista This is an online statistic portal that provides information from over 18,000 sources. According to their site, there are over 600 searchable topics to include e-commerce, the fast food industry, cosmetics, film, apparel, electronics and more. They provide statistical information that can be converted into infographics and reports for individual and corporate users. Their clients include Google, IBM, ESPN, and PayPal. The Cancer Atlas The American Cancer Society, along with its partners the World Health Organization and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), developed this site to educate the world about the global fight against cancer. The site provides the latest information about risk factors, burden, and how we can take action to combat the disease. This information is available in English. The Family Doctor This website has a plethora of information on nutrition that the consumer can use. Hosted by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the site covers topics relevant to all age groups to include breastfeeding, dietary supplements, and diseases. Some of the sites most informative topics are how to determine your calorie needs and how to read food labels. The National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances The National List is the USDA’s approved list of non-organic substances that can be used in organic crops. If someone want to change the list they have to petition for the substances addition or removal. The site also contains the most current regulations regarding organics and explains the organic labeling. The Non-GMO Project The Non-GMO Project (a non-profit organization) is the only third party verification and labeling organization in the United States. Their goal is to education the general population about non-GMO products; therefore, they have an extensive on-line database where consumers can verify products, retailers, and restaurants. They are also the creators of Non-GMO Month, which is October. In 2015, 2,100 retailers participated in the events. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) WIC is a program under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that targets low-income families with children. Eligibility depends on family size and revenue. They have a program called the WIC Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), which allows participants to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. |
