CAM for Holistic Wellness
This site is an original capstone project for HW499, Bachelors Capstone in Health and Wellness, Kaplan University.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a category of medicine that encompasses modalities that are not normally within the scope of allopathic (Western) medicine. Within this category are modalities such as botanical medicine, aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, meditation, reiki, mind-body therapies, spirituality, healing touch, music therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic, osteopathy and yoga.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), an agency under the US National Institute of Health (NIH), “approximately 38 percent of adults (4 in 10) and approximately 12 percent of children (1 in 9) are using some form of CAM.” Below is a three-part series entitled “CAM Modalities for Self-Care.” In this series, I cover three modalities – tai chi, meditation, and aroma therapy- from the home care perspective. Each 90-minute lecture covers the definition, history, benefits, evidence, precautions and practical application for each modality. It is written in terms that lends itself to a basic understanding of the topic and focuses more on how to apply it to your daily life to create holistic wellness. Enjoy!
